How the speed camera program works in San Francisco

San Francisco operates 33 automated speed cameras in school zones and safety corridors under California's AB 645 pilot program. The program has been fully active since August 2025. Cameras are operated by Verra Mobility on behalf of SFMTA.

When a camera records your vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit, Verra Mobility mails a Notice of Violation to the registered owner. The notice is a civil penalty issued on behalf of SFMTA, not a criminal charge and not a standard traffic citation. It does not go through the court system. You respond through SFMTA's administrative review process, either online at sfmta.com/speedsafety or by mail.
