CVC 26709 requires motor vehicles (except motorcycles) to have at least one mirror providing a clear view of the highway for at least 200 feet to the rear. A "mirror requirements" violation typically means a required mirror is missing, broken, or obstructed. This is usually a correctable fix-it ticket.
Mirror violations carry no DMV points and a low base fine. The danger is practical — driving without adequate rear visibility increases accident risk. Get the mirror repaired or replaced and sign off the ticket.
No DMV points — no insurance impact.
Driver's passenger side mirror is broken off entirely.
Fix-it ticket; if the driver-side mirror is intact and provides 200-foot view, this may be the minimum — but best to replace both.
Vehicle has heavily tinted rear window — officer cites for missing left exterior mirror.
When rear window is tinted or obscured, CVC 26709 requires TWO exterior mirrors (left and right). Missing one is a violation.
These are the defense arguments that appear most often in successful Trial by Written Declarations for this violation.
Mirrors provided required rearward visibility
CVC 26709 requires mirrors that provide an unobstructed view 200 feet to the rear. If your mirrors met this standard, challenge the citation.
Correctable violation
Install compliant mirrors and get a Certificate of Correction.
