Does the City of Los Angeles have red light cameras?

Not as of October 2026, as far as official records show. The City Council phased out the photo red light program in 2011 (Council File 11-1015), and we found no city source showing a restart. Other cities in Los Angeles County may run their own programs.

I got a red light camera notice with a Los Angeles address. What is it?

Read who issued it. A court citation names the Superior Court of Los Angeles County and cites Vehicle Code 21453. A notice from another city’s program names that city or its agency. If a notice asks you to pay a private company and names no court or agency, check it on the court’s or agency’s official website before paying.

Do red light tickets carry DMV points?

A court conviction for running a red light (Vehicle Code 21453) adds 1 point. A civil SB 720 notice from a city that opted into that program carries no point.

Los Angeles's Red Light Cameras

Status as of October 7, 2026: Ended. The City of Los Angeles phased out its photo red light program in 2011 (City Council File 11-1015). We found no city source showing that it has restarted red light cameras under either state law.

If you got a red light ticket in the City of Los Angeles, it was most likely issued by an officer. Other cities in Los Angeles County run their own traffic enforcement, so a camera ticket from one of them is that city’s program, not the City of Los Angeles. The notice tells you which court or agency issued it.

Court citation or city notice? How to tell

A traditional red light camera ticket is a court citation: it names a superior court, gives a due date, cites Vehicle Code 21453, and a conviction adds 1 DMV point. You can contest it in court, including by Trial by Written Declaration. A civil red light notice under SB 720 (Vehicle Code 21455.9, in effect since January 1, 2026) comes from a city or county agency that opted in: it is a Notice of Violation with no DMV point, a penalty of $100 for a first violation, and an initial review with the agency, then an administrative hearing, then an appeal to superior court.

Fines and DMV Points

An officer-issued red light ticket under Vehicle Code 21453(a) has a $100 base fine; under the Judicial Council’s 2026 bail schedule the total is $486, and Los Angeles County is one of the counties allowed to charge more. A conviction adds 1 DMV point. The exact amount is on your notice.

How to Contest

Officer-issued red light tickets go to the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. You can contest them in person or by Trial by Written Declaration (Vehicle Code 40902). If your ticket came from another city’s camera program, follow the instructions on that notice.
