Status as of October 7, 2026: Ended. The City of San Diego ended its red light photo enforcement program; a city news release dated February 1, 2013 says the system ran through the night before. We found no city source showing a restart.

If you got a red light ticket in the City of San Diego, it was most likely issued by an officer. Other cities in San Diego County run their own traffic enforcement, so read your notice to see which court or agency issued it.

Court citation or city notice? How to tell

A traditional red light camera ticket is a court citation: it names a superior court, gives a due date, cites Vehicle Code 21453, and a conviction adds 1 DMV point. You can contest it in court, including by Trial by Written Declaration. A civil red light notice under SB 720 (Vehicle Code 21455.9, in effect since January 1, 2026) comes from a city or county agency that opted in: it is a Notice of Violation with no DMV point, a penalty of $100 for a first violation, and an initial review with the agency, then an administrative hearing, then an appeal to superior court.

Fines and DMV Points

An officer-issued red light ticket under Vehicle Code 21453(a) has a $100 base fine. The San Diego Superior Court’s own example shows a $486 total, and San Diego County is one of the counties allowed to charge more than the statewide schedule. A conviction adds 1 DMV point.

How to Contest

Because it is a court case, you contest it with the San Diego County Superior Court named on the notice, in person or by Trial by Written Declaration (Vehicle Code 40902). You usually deposit the bail amount when you file. If you lose a written declaration, most courts let you ask for a new trial within 20 calendar days after the court mails its decision; courts that offer online trial by declaration through MyCitations do not, and you can appeal instead.
