I got a speeding ticket in Fresno. Is it a camera ticket?

If it came from a police officer or the CHP, or it is a notice to appear from the Fresno County Superior Court, it is a court citation, not an AB 645 camera notice. Court citations can usually be contested by Trial by Written Declaration.

California allows automated speed cameras only where the Vehicle Code says so. AB 645 names six cities (Los Angeles, San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, Long Beach and San Francisco), SB 1297 covers Malibu’s stretch of Pacific Coast Highway, and AB 289 lets Caltrans use up to 35 cameras in state highway work zones, ticketing only when workers are present. None of these is a Fresno city program. Separately, the Fresno City Council approved a resolution on June 25, 2026 to set up a future red light camera pilot under SB 720; that is a red light program, not speed cameras.

Fines

No AB 645 speed camera fines apply in Fresno. A speeding ticket from an officer in Fresno is a court infraction: under the Judicial Council’s 2026 bail schedule, the total is about $234 for 1 to 15 mph over, $363 for 16 to 25 mph over, and $486 for 26 mph or more over. Fresno County is one of the counties allowed to charge more than the schedule, so check the amount on your notice.

Look at who sent it. A notice to appear from the Fresno County Superior Court is a court citation, and you can usually contest it by Trial by Written Declaration (Vehicle Code 40902). A notice that asks you to pay a private company, does not name a court or a city agency, or pushes you to pay through a link should be checked against the court’s or agency’s official website before you pay anything.
